On June 21, game peripheral maker Retro-Bit announced the controller “BIG6” that can be used with PCs and Nintendo Switch. The lineup consists of the following three models, both wired and wireless. The wired model will be released overseas in October this year, and the wireless model will be released overseas in November.
・ BIG6 Control Pad for SEGA Genesis (wired)
Exclusive for Mega Drive ・ $ 16.99 (approx. 2300 yen)
・ BIG6 Arcade Pad with USB (wired)
Compatible with PC / Nintendo Switch, etc. ・ $ 19.99 (approx. 2700 yen)
・ BIG6 2.4GHz Wireless Arcade Pad (wireless)
Compatible with PC / Nintendo Switch / Mega Drive, etc. ・ $ 34.99 (approx. 4800 yen)
BIG6 features a design with a mega drive controller as a motif. Since the Sega logo can be seen on the front, it seems that it will be officially licensed from the company and sold. The developer, Retro-Bit, partnered with Sega in 2017 and has a track record of working on Sega official reproduction controllers for Mega Drive and Sega Saturn (related article).
On the other hand, the BIG6 announced this time is not a reprint controller. At first glance, it looks like the control pad that came with the Mega Drive, but it has a 6-button specification of ABCXYZ instead of the 3-button of ABC. This is the style of the Fighting Pad 6B, which has become the standard controller for the Mega Drive 2. In other words, the BIG6 is a controller created by combining these two designs, old and new.
BIG6 Control Pad for SEGA Genesis is a wired controller with a connection terminal for Mega Drive / Genesis. The cable length is 3m. The MODE button is also mounted on the right bumper part. In Fighting Pad 6B, the START button was located in the center, but in this product, it is moved to the top of the 6 button, which is close to the style of the control pad.
BIG6 Arcade Pad with USB is a wired controller compatible with PCs and Nintendo Switch. It can also be used with the Mega Drive Mini (it is highly likely that it can also be used with the Mega Drive Mini 2 scheduled to be released in October this year). The basic specifications are the same as the above model, but instead of the MODE button, the left and right bumpers are equipped with LR buttons. A HOME / Select button has also been added to the front side.
And the BIG6 2.4GHz Wireless Arcade Pad is a wireless version of the USB model mentioned above. It has a built-in 500mAh battery and can be charged with a USB Type-C cable. And the receiver for mega drive and USB connection are included respectively, and wireless play is possible even with mega drive.
The BIG6 Control Pad for SEGA Genesis and BIG6 Arcade Pad with USB will be available in October this year, and the BIG6 2.4GHz Wireless Arcade Pad will be available in November. Currently, reservations are being accepted at the American retailer Castlemania. The shop also supports overseas shipping.
For Retro-Bit products, for example, the reprinted version of the Sega Saturn pad mentioned above is also sold at Amazon in Japan. BIG6 may also be released in Japan in the future.
