“Seized art works are ours, not my husband” Choi Soon-young, former chairman of Shin Dong-ah’s family lawsuit

On March 3, an employee of the 38th Tax Collection Division in Seoul reveals cash and artworks confiscated from the home of former Shindong-A Group Chairman Choi Soon-young in Yangjae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul in the briefing room of the Seoul City Hall. yunhap news

It has been confirmed that the wife and two children of former Shin Dong-A Group chairman Choi Soon-young filed a lawsuit against former chairman Choi to confirm the ownership of the art objects seized by the city of Seoul. If former Chairman Choi loses, the Seoul Metropolitan Government must return the confiscated art to his family.

According to the court on the 4th, Choi’s wife Lee Hyung-ja and their two children filed a lawsuit against the former Chairman Choi in April of this year to confirm the ownership of the company with the Seoul Central District Court. He was assigned to the Civil Division 21 of the Central District Court, but the trial has not yet started in earnest.

Lee and others are claiming that the artworks that the Seoul Metropolitan Government seized from Choi’s home on March 3 are not owned jointly with Choi, but are wholly owned by them. At the time, Choi’s tax arrears amounted to 3.89 billion won, and the city of Seoul seized 26.87 million won in cash and 20 pieces of personal property, including art, after a house search.

The city of Seoul decided to take part in the lawsuit to collect tax arrears, and last month appointed Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon as an assistant participant in the defendant’s lawsuit. A city official said, “It is the first case in 20 years (since 2001, when an organization dedicated to collection of delinquent taxes was established) that a lawsuit was filed against a spouse for seizure of personal property. I was able to actively apply for subsidized participation because of the victory.”
