Former India captain Gautam Gambhir has demanded that Iyer be dropped from the ODI squad for the disappointing ODI series against South Africa. Gambhir said Iyer was not mature enough to play ODI cricket. Gambhir said that playing 50 overs cricket requires some different skills and therefore Iyer needs to go back to domestic cricket and spend a lot of time in the middle order.
Iyer is the opener in the IPL. But now he is playing in the middle order in the Indian team. If Iyer is still considered for the ODI team, he should be asked by the IPL team to play in the middle order. Gambhir clarified.
Venkatesh Iyer is an Indian cricketer who made his ODI debut on the recent tour of South Africa. However, he reached the ODI team with high hopes but did not shine in the series. He was out for 2 in the first match and scored only 22 in the second. Iyer, who did not get a chance to bowl in the first ODI, bowled in the second ODI but could not take any wickets.
Iyer, who played in the home series against New Zealand, was also selected in the ODI team for the tour of South Africa. He scored 370 runs in 10 innings in the 14th season of the IPL and was instrumental in helping the Kolkata Knight Riders reach the final.
