Senegal-The ravages of the 3rd term virus

The socio-political crisis that Senegal is going through leaves no one indifferent. Voices rise and openly accuse Macky Sall. In Lomé, human rights defenders warn the Senegalese president who aims to run for a third term.

“Macky Sall could avoid all this damage by finishing his mandate and letting Senegalese democracy move forward. People have already tried and found themselves out of the country because chased out by the military, this is the example of Professor Alpha Condé. We do not wish this fate on the Senegalese president. This is why we ask him to pull himself together. We deplore this virus of the 3rd mandate which does not teach African heads of state a lesson”, indicated Pastor Edoh Komi, president of the Martin Luther King Movement (MMLK).

For the deputy mayor of the Golfe 2 commune, the two-year prison sentence of the opponent Ousmane Sonko for “youth corruption” sufficiently shows the degree of instrumentalization of the Senegalese justice system, a sulphurous maneuver to remove a political adversary.

“We cannot, on the basis of false statements or declarations, want to dismiss a political adversary. A head of state does not have the power to dismiss his adversary, but unfortunately he sometimes goes through the courts to do his dirty work. We strongly condemn this forced passage by Macky Sall,” added the human rights defender.

According to him, violence will not solve the problem: “Senegal is going through total chaos, destruction, fires and vandalism. Do we need all that? We could save all this and keep Senegal’s status as a model democracy. But this is not the case. Ideally, Macky Sall would come to his senses so as not to violate the rights of the Senegalese people. We will have to save the furniture, ”said the president of the MMLK.

As a reminder. The deadly clashes between security forces and demonstrators in Senegal during the past week have already left 16 dead, 400 injured and 500 arrested.
