Even if you drink 2 to 3 small drinks, 5 times or more a week, the risk of stomach cancer increases by 46% compared to people who don’t drink, a study found.

A research team led by Professor Daehee Kang (Ph.D. Hwiwon Lee, Dan Hwang) from the Department of Preventive Medicine, Seoul National University College of Medicine, conducted a study of 128,218 healthy middle-aged adults between the ages of 40 and 69 who participated in the study epidemiological in the city from 2004 to 2013. According to the results of subsequent observation of the effect on the incidence of gastric cancer, the association was found.

According to the results of the study, a total of 847 gastric cancer patients (462 males and 385 females) occurred during the follow-up period. When this was divided into the drinking group and the non-drinking group, it was observed that the risk of gastric cancer in the drinking group was 31% higher in the male group than in the non-drinking group. Women, on the other hand, did not have this association.

In men, it was found that the risk of gastric cancer increases proportionally with the increase in the frequency of drinking once a week and the amount of alcohol consumed at one time of 10 g.

In particular, it has been estimated that even a small amount of less than 40g could increase the risk of stomach cancer by 46% if you drink more than 5 times a week.

Professor Kang said, “This study shows that incorrect drinking habits increase the risk of stomach cancer in middle-aged and elderly men in Korea. It is important to give the body enough time to break the alcohol down in such a way as to do that,” he said.

The results of this study were published in the latest edition of the international scientific journal ‘Cancer Biology & Medicine’.
