Kwon Jae-chan, who is accused of killing a middle-aged woman he knew, and then leaving the body with an accomplice, was sentenced to death.

At the first trial today, the 15th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court sentenced the 53-year-old Kwon Jae-chan to the death penalty, and ordered the installation of a location tracking electronic device for 30 years.

The court said, “The accused approached the victim and committed the crime for the purpose of escaping from the poor economic situation, dragged in an accomplice and killed him.”

“We cannot expect the accused to be rehabilitated or to recover his humanity,” he said.

Earlier, the prosecution asked the court to impose the death penalty at a decision hearing held last month.

Kwon Jae-chan was put on trial on charges of murdering a woman in her 50s, whom she usually knew at an underground parking lot in Michuhol-gu, Incheon in December last year, leaving her body in the trunk of a car, and stealing a woman’s credit card to withdraw money.

Kwon Jae-chan is also accused of murdering a man in his 40s who assisted him in the crime the day after the crime in a forest in Eulwang-ri, Incheon, and then burying it in the dark.

It is the first time a death sentence was sentenced in the first trial in two years and seven months since the murder of Ahn In-deuk in an apartment in Jinju, Gyeongsangnam-do, in November 2019.
