Security Chiefs Discuss Joint Response to North Korea-Russia Summit

The Office of the President stated in a press release, “National Security Bureau Director Cho Tae-yong, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, and Japan’s National Security Director Takeo Akiba expressed serious concerns about the various military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, including the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs), despite repeated warnings from the international community.”

Chairman Kim Jong-un of North Korea and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit at the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia the previous day.

The security chiefs of the three countries warned, “North Korea and Russia must comply with the obligations to ban arms trade and military cooperation imposed by the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council and various international sanctions, and if they violate this, they will pay a clear price.” The President’s Office affirmed this.

In addition, the heads of the three countries emphasized that “Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, has an even greater responsibility to comply with the decisions of the Security Council.”

They also decided to enhance cooperation between the three countries in identifying trends in arms trade and military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, preparing countermeasures, and strengthening solidarity with the international community.

The President’s Office confirmed that Sullivan reiterated the United States’ ironclad security commitment to Korea and Japan.
