(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Koh Mi-hye = The number of people visiting the hospital for osteoporosis is constantly increasing.

According to the ‘Osteoporosis Disease Health Insurance Treatment Status’ published by the National Health Insurance Corporation on the 9th, the number of people treated for osteoporosis increased from 913,852 in 2017 to 1,138,840 in 2021, which is 224,988 (24.6%). . The average annual growth rate is 5.7%.

The number of medical treatments per 100,000 of the population also increased from 1,794 to 2,215 over the same period. The total health insurance cost of osteoporosis patients also increased by 51.9% over the past five years to 326.8 billion won in 2021.

BACKGROUND OF THE DEVICE Osteoporosis is a disease where bone mass decreases and bone strength weakens, leading to a condition where fractures occur easily. In severe cases, a shock such as bumping into furniture or sneezing can break a bone.

In most cases, there are no specific symptoms in the early stages, so it is known as the ‘silent bone thief’.

It is one of the representative geriatric diseases, and the majority of patients are female.

In 2021, 94% of the number of patients were women, in particular 37.6% of the total were women in their 60s.

This is related to the fact that the secretion of the female hormone estrogen, which has the effect of inhibiting osteoclasts that destroy bones, decreases rapidly with menopause.

Shin Seong-jae, professor of endocrinology at Ilsan Hospital of the National Health Insurance Service, said, “As menopause occurs, bone resorption, which is bone loss due to changes in estrogen levels, increases by about 90%, while bone formation increases by only 45%, leading to bone loss and making people more susceptible to osteoporosis.” he explained.

To prevent osteoporosis, it is important to eat enough calcium and maintain vitamin D levels in the blood.

The Korean Society of Bone Metabolism recommends 800 to 1,000 mg of calcium and 800 IU (International Unit) or more of vitamin D per day. It is also necessary to eat protein, vegetables and fruit properly, avoid instant foods, alcohol, cigarettes and carbonated drinks, and exercise regularly.

If osteoporosis is neglected, fractures occur mainly in the spine, wrist and femur, and once a fracture occurs, the likelihood of fracture within a year increases fourfold in men and doubles in women, so appropriate treatment is important, emphasized Professor Shin.
