Local media reported that those in the same prison cell had escaped and were suspected of receiving outside help. It is reported that a tunnel was dug from under a toilet in the cell. The tunnel was constructed in such a way that one could get out of the jail. Former Fatah leader Zakaria Zubaidi and five members of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad have escaped. Survivors include Monadel Yaqub Nafeet, Yaqub Qasem, Yaqub Mahmoud Qadri, Ayaam Naif Kamanji and Mahmoud Abdullah Arda. According to local media reports, at least four of them are serving life sentences.

A taxi driver told police he saw four people in a mysterious situation near a gas station outside the jail at around 1.30am, according to the Haaretz report. It was around 5 in the morning when the tunnel under the cell was found outside the jail.

Prison sources said the tunnel had been dug by inmates for the past several months. Prison officials suspect that they escaped from the cell after contacting outsiders using a mobile phone hidden in the cell. It is also suspected that a car was outside to help the survivors. There were also plans to release more Palestinian prisoners through the tunnel.

Israeli Prime Minister Naphtali Bennett said the incident was “extremely serious”. The Prime Minister held talks with Public Security Minister Omar Bar Lev. The Israeli prison department said there was a serious security breach. At the same time, the Islamic Jihad in Palestine said that a heroic imprisonment had taken place. A Hamas spokesman said the detention was a testament to the bravery of Palestinian prisoners.
