SK Co., Ltd. and SK Materials merged corporation to be launched on the 1st of next month

The merger between SK Corporation and SK Materials will be officially launched on the 1st of next month.

The merger is about four months after the announcement of the merger promotion in August. The name of the merged corporation is SK Corporation, and new shares are scheduled to be listed on the 27th of next month. The existing special gas business division of SK Materials is divided into a new corporation through a physical spin-off.

By 2025, SK holdings will invest a total of 5.1 trillion won in four areas of advanced materials: battery materials, power/compound semiconductors, semiconductor materials, and display materials.

SK holdings will continue to invest in the next-generation anode and cathode materials, which are attracting attention as a technology that will dramatically improve battery performance with Watson, the world’s No. 1 copper foil manufacturer. Also in the next-generation cathode material market, SK holdings is discussing the establishment of a joint venture with Beijing Easpring Material Technology, a leading cathode material technology company in China.

In the anode material field, the existing SK Materials and Group 14 Technologies of the United States have started to establish a next-generation silicon anode material joint venture with the goal of mass production in 2023.

In addition, we are pushing for expansion of investment in sub-materials for high-performance anodes, such as carbon nanotube (CNT) conductive materials.

At the same time, we will promote the localization of gallium nitride (GaN) SiC semiconductors and VCSELs, which are core materials for 5G communication and autonomous driving.
