Sleep Disorders: A Potential Cause of Sudden Death and Cerebral Hemorrhage

– Is sleep disorder a potential cause of sudden death during sleep and cerebral hemorrhage?
– Polysomnography should be used to diagnose the cause of sleep apnea, which can then be treated with positive airway pressure therapy.

[Seoul, South Korea, October 5, 2022] As the temperature drops and autumn sets in, it’s important to be cautious during seasonal transitions. The cold air can lead to severe vasoconstriction, which in turn can result in sudden death. Sudden death, characterized by an abrupt and unexpected occurrence, typically happens within an hour of symptom onset and is often caused by cerebral hemorrhage or myocardial infarction. In fact, in the United States, cerebrovascular and cardiovascular diseases account for 50% of all sudden deaths.

A recent study shed light on the potential role of “sleep disorders” as a contributing factor to cerebrovascular diseases. Dr. Virend Somers, a renowned expert from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, discovered a significant association between sleep apnea and sudden death. In a study involving sleep apnea patients in their 30s and 40s, it was found that a 10% drop in the lowest oxygen saturation during sleep led to an increased risk of sudden death or cardiac arrest by 14%. Furthermore, when oxygen saturation levels fell below 78%, the risk of sudden death from cerebrovascular disease skyrocketed to 80%. Remarkably, patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea, characterized by a respiratory distress index of 20 or more times per hour, had a risk of death from any cause more than three times higher than that of the general population.

Jin-gyu Han, director of the prestigious Seoul Sleep Center, elaborated on the detrimental effects of sleep apnea. “Severe sleep apnea can trigger a decline in blood oxygen saturation levels, thus placing significant stress on the brain and potentially leading to sudden death,” he warned. Han also pointed out that symptoms such as daytime drowsiness, fatigue, and memory loss are common indicators of sleep apnea and underscored the increased risk of diabetes and high blood pressure, which can be up to eight times higher among individuals with this sleep disorder.

Fortunately, various treatment options are available for sleep apnea, including weight management, posture therapy, positive airway pressure therapy, intraoral devices, and surgical intervention. Each approach has its own merits and drawbacks, necessitating accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plans conducted by sleep specialists.

Polysomnography, a comprehensive sleep study, is essential for accurately diagnosing snoring and sleep apnea. Once sleep apnea is confirmed, treatment with a positive airway pressure device is widely regarded as the most effective approach. By artificially providing air, positive airway pressure therapy restores oxygen concentration to normal levels, thereby preventing sleep apnea and improving sleep quality.

If you find yourself constantly fatigued during the autumn season, it may be indicative of burnout. Fatigue symptoms often arise due to our bodies’ biological rhythms being sensitive to temperature changes and struggling to adjust to sudden shifts in the external environment. Furthermore, poor sleep quality exacerbates fatigue symptoms. Maintaining indoor humidity levels at 50-60% can prove helpful during the dry autumn months, as it prevents the nasal mucosa from drying out during sleep and reduces the severity of snoring or mouth breathing.

– Is sleep disorder the cause of sudden death during sleep and cerebral hemorrhage?
– The cause of sleep apnea should be diagnosed by polysomnography and treated with positive airway pressure.

[이데일리 이순용 기자] The hot summer has passed and autumn has arrived with cold mornings and nights. Be careful during seasonal changes as the cold air causes severe vasoconstriction, which can lead to sudden death. Sudden death, which occurs suddenly and completely unexpectedly, occurs within an hour of the onset of symptoms and is caused by cerebral haemorrhage or myocardial infarction. In the United States, 50% of sudden deaths were due to cerebrovascular disease or cardiovascular disease.

A study was published showing that one of the causes of these cerebrovascular diseases is “sleep disorders.” According to Dr Virend Somers of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, experiments on patients in their 30s and 40s who suffer from sleep apnea showed that when the lowest oxygen saturation during sleep had dropped by 10%, sudden death or cardiac arrest has occurred. revealed that the risk of death due to this increased by 14%. In addition, when oxygen saturation falls below 78%, the risk of sudden death from cerebrovascular disease increases to 80%. Patients with moderate to severe sleep apnea with a respiratory distress index of 20 or more times per hour had a risk of death from any cause more than three times higher than that of the general population.

Regarding this, Jin-gyu Han, director of the Seoul Sleep Center, said, “If the symptoms of sleep apnea are severe, the oxygen saturation in the blood decreases, stressing the brain, which can lead to sudden death.” He added, “Symptoms such as daytime drowsiness, daytime fatigue, and memory loss can occur if sleep apnea occurs.” “And the risk of diabetes and high blood pressure increases up to eight times,” he stressed.

There are many treatment methods for sleep apnea, including weight management, posture therapy, positive airway pressure therapy, intraoral devices, and surgical treatment. Each of these treatment methods has its indications and benefits and ‘its own disadvantages, so correct diagnosis and treatment by a sleep specialist are provided.

In order to accurately diagnose snoring and sleep apnea, it is important to diagnose through polysomnography, and if sleep apnea is confirmed, breathing treatment using a positive airway pressure device is most effective. Because positive airway pressure therapy plays a role in artificially supplying air, it restores the reduced oxygen concentration to normal, preventing sleep apnea and improving sleep quality.

If you find yourself away all the time during the change of seasons in autumn, you should suspect that you are suffering from burnout. Symptoms of fatigue occur because our body’s biological rhythm, which is sensitive to temperature, cannot properly follow sudden daily temperature changes or changes in the external environment. Because poor sleep quality also causes symptoms of fatigue, it is useful to maintain indoor humidity at 50-60% because in the dry autumn, the nasal mucosa dries out during sleep and snoring becomes more severe or mouth breathing occurs.
