We know that some of the most important side effects of smoking are lung cancer and respiratory problems. But is divorce also a bad thing? According to lawmaker Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan’s ruling party, smoking is the leading cause of divorce. Tehreek-e-Insaf (TEI) National Assembly member Dr. Mohd. Says Nousheen Hameed.

She was speaking at a seminar on tobacco use in Islamabad on Tuesday. They argue that many marriages end in divorce because members of the household allow women to smoke. In addition, there has been a huge increase in the number of women smoking in recent years. Another argument is that it is bad for marriage.

According to a survey conducted by leading agency Gallup & Gilani, 58 per cent of Pakistanis believe that the divorce rate in Pakistan has risen. At the same time, it is a fact that the majority of divorce petitioners are women.

The availability of cheap cigarettes in Pakistan attracts people to smoke. Studies show that smoking currently accounts for 11% of all deaths. According to a 2013 study by the Chicago Institute for Health Research at the University of Illinois, more than 22 million Pakistanis aged 18 and over are tobacco users.
