Sony announces that PS5 will officially enable VRR variable update rate this week

After a long wait, the VRR variable update rate feature that everyone has been knocking for a long time is finally coming to PS5. SONY announced today that it will launch VRR variable update rate support for PS5 players around the world this week. On VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 TVs and computer monitors, VRR will dynamically sync the screen’s refresh rate to match the PS5 console’s graphics output. This feature enhances the visual performance of PS5 games by drastically reducing or eliminating visual artifacts such as frame sync issues and tearing. Many PS5 titles will have a smoother playing experience thanks to fast scene rendering times, sharper image quality, and reduced input lag. *Previously released PS5 games will be fully optimized for VRR through game patches, while future games may include VRR support at launch. *

In the coming weeks, the PS5 versions of the following games will receive game patches to enable VRR support:

  • Call of Duty: Vanguard
  • Call of Duty: Black Cold War
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 2 Special Edition
  • “Long March 5” (DIRT 5)
  • 《Godfall》
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank Rift
  • “Evil Castle: Village” Bohazard village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • 《Tribes of Midgard》

VRR will be rolling out globally in the next few days via a PS5 console update (please make sure you have an internet connection to receive the update). After receiving the update, if your PS5 console is connected to a VRR-compatible HDMI 2.1 TV or computer monitor, games that support this feature will automatically enable VRR. You can also turn it off in “Screen and Video” in the system settings.

In addition, SONY also said that although there are no games that support the VRR function, the picture quality of some games can be improved through this function. However, you can turn this option off at any time if you experience unexpected effects. However, be sure to note that VRR only corresponds to TVs and monitors that are compatible with HDMI 2.1. If you do not have them, you will not be able to enjoy these functions.
