Sony expects PlayStation game business to decline, console supply exceeds demand but game demand decreases – Hong Kong unwire.hk

Sony’s PlayStation 5 has been plagued by out-of-stock problems since its launch, and it’s been worse recently. In an earlier earnings report, they lowered their full-year profit forecast for the gaming business.

Sony said it shipped 2.4 million PS5 units in the last quarter (the second quarter of fiscal 2022), up just 4 percent from the same period last year, with total sales now at 21.7 million. While console sales remained stable, game sales fell by 26%. They explained that this was because there were fewer major games this year than last year, and players spent less time playing games. PSN monthly active users fell by 3%. . Sony said that the most important thing at the moment is still to increase the supply of consoles, hoping to reach the goal of shipping 18 million units in the 2022 fiscal year.

In the report, Sony cut its full-year profit forecast for the gaming business by 16%, related to lower revenue and expenses needed to acquire Bungie. In addition to Sony, their rival Microsoft is also facing the same problem. Last quarter, revenue from Xbox game consoles fell 11%, but content and services revenue fell only 6%, less than Sony.
