Children who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 in South Africa have been the hardest hit in recent days, local media reported.
Dr Wasilla Jasat of the National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) warns that hospitalization rates for children under the age of five are rising rapidly.
Based on the 4th week of the surge in infection led by Omicron, a new mutant of COVID-19, it was identified that more than 100 infants under the age of 4 were hospitalized.
Most parents of hospitalized infants and toddlers have not been vaccinated.
Infants have not previously been severely affected by COVID-19.
“It’s different from what we’ve seen before,” said Dr. Jasat.
South Africa started vaccinating people over the age of 12 on the 1st of last month, and has not yet allowed vaccinations below that.
