SP suffers setback; Mulayam Singh’s daughter-in-law may contest in BJP

New Delhi: Aparna Yadav, daughter-in-law of former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, has joined the BJP. UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya and BJP state president Swatantra Dev Singh welcomed Aparna as a member. Aparna’s change of party is a major setback for the SP in the run-up to the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.

Aparna is the wife of Mulayam’s youngest son Pratik. Aparna was the SP candidate in the last election. Aparna, who contested from Lucknow Cantonment in the 2017 Assembly elections, is likely to contest from there again. He was in second place that day. Aparna had earlier made headlines for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development initiatives.

Aparna’s decisive move comes days before the UP Assembly elections. Political observers say this will be a setback for SP’s Akhilesh Yadav. Three UP ministers and several MLAs, including Swami Prasad Maurya, Dharam Singh Saini and Dara Singh Chauhan, had joined the SP from the BJP last week.
