Chuseok Full Moon: An Enchanting Celestial Display
During the cherished holiday of Chuseok, people have long held the tradition of making wishes while gazing at the luminous full moon. This year, however, the Chuseok full moon promises to be an extraordinary spectacle.
Rumored to resemble a supermoon in its size and brilliance, this special lunar event will be accompanied by the radiant presence of Jupiter and Saturn on either side. Nature’s majestic theater is about to unfold.
Ancient Beliefs and the Significance of the Full Moon
For generations, our ancestors nurtured the belief that the larger and rounder the Chuseok full moon, the more bountiful the harvest and abundant the autumn fishing grounds.
As dusk falls on Chuseok, Seoul will witness the rising of the moon at precisely 6:23 pm. Around 7:57 pm, the moon will reach its maximum roundness and size, rivalling last month’s captivating supermoon by a mere 1% difference. In essence, a supermoon of exceptional magnitude.
A Celestial Dance: The Full Moon, Saturn, and Jupiter
Accompanying this grand lunar spectacle is a mesmerizing celestial performance intertwining Saturn and Jupiter with the full moon at its heart.
At approximately 5 pm, Saturn will gracefully emerge, followed by the full moon in the lower left. Subsequently, around 8 pm, Jupiter will take its position to the lower left of the full moon, compelling the three celestial bodies to radiate their brilliance throughout the night.
Professor Itae-hyeong, Director of the Chungju Goguryeo Astronomy and Science Museum, states that this year’s Chuseok full moon closely mirrors the size and roundness of the previous remarkable supermoon.
Astoundingly, the 1st magnitude planet, Saturn, will proudly grace the upper right quadrant, while its celestial companion, Jupiter-the luminary that outshines Saturn tenfold-will illuminate the lower left quadrant.
This celestial rendezvous of the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn promises to embellish the night sky not only during Chuseok but also until October 2nd, the illustrious culmination of the Golden Week holiday.
With this celestial spectacle awaiting us, the nights following Chuseok will be imbued with awe-inspiring beauty, enticing onlookers to cast their eyes skyward.

Chuseok, the nation’s biggest holiday,
Since ancient times, our ancestors have made wishes while looking at the full moon.
This is because it was believed that the bigger and rounder the Chuseok full moon, the better the harvest and the richer the fall fishing grounds.
This year, on Chuseok, you can see an unusually large and round full moon.
The moon rises in Seoul at 6:23 pm, around 57 pm, when it becomes largest and roundest.
If you compare the magnitude at this time with last month’s supermoon, there is only a 1% difference.
It is a super moon level full moon.
There will also be a space show where you can see Saturn and Jupiter with the full moon in the middle.
Around 5 pm, Saturn will rise first and the full moon will appear in the lower left.
After that, around 8 pm, Jupiter will also appear to the lower left of the full moon, and the three celestial bodies will continue to shine together throughout the night.

In particular, the 1st magnitude planet Saturn is located in the upper right, and Jupiter, which is about 10 times brighter than Saturn, is located in the lower left.
The rendezvous of the Moon, Jupiter, and Saturn is expected to decorate the night sky after Chuseok until October 2nd, which is the last half of the Golden Week holiday.
