Tom Dumoulin still has to postpone his long-awaited return. The Jumbo-Visma rider has become ill and therefore cannot participate in the Tour of Valencia this week.

Dumoulin would ride his first race in Valencia in eight months. His last performance was at the Critérium du Dauphiné in July last year. The then rider of Team Sunweb had to abandon that race due to the knee injury he sustained during the Giro d’Italia in May.

“The boys have just left here in Valencia for a training ride, but unfortunately without me. I got sick on Monday evening and returned home to recover,” writes 29-year-old Dumoulin on Instagram on Tuesday.

“This is not the way I wanted to start the season. I came to Spain to build up fitness, not to let it get any less. But if you don’t feel well, you shouldn’t race. I hope to return soon to be.”

German Martens replaces Dumoulin

Dumoulin has been riding for Jumbo-Visma since this season, after having been under contract with Sunweb for the past eight years. The Giro winner of 2017 is coming to the Tour de France this summer. Dumoulin will share the lead with teammates Steven Kruijswijk and Primoz Roglic.

Due to the loss of Dumoulin, the German Paul Martens will be at the start of the first stage in the Tour of Valencia. The Jumbo-Visma team also consists of Dylan Groenewegen, Pascal Eenkhoorn, Jos van Emden, the Norwegian Tobias Foss, the German Christoph Pfingsten and the Belgian Maarten Wynants.

The Tour of Valencia starts on Wednesday with a flat stage of 180 kilometers. The Spanish stage race, which has no WorldTour status, lasts until Sunday.
