Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense has warned that this is not the first time Chinese balloons of this type have crossed US airspace. According to a Department official, such balloons flew over the United States at least three times during the administration of former US President Donald Trump, according to a Pentagon release.
Mark Esper, the former Secretary of Defense under Trump, was visibly irritated by the ministry’s report. Speaking to US news outlet CNN, he said, “I don’t recall anyone ever coming to my office or reading anything about the Chinese having a surveillance balloon over the United States.” He added: “I would certainly remember that.”
