Thalassery: While the whole world is watching football in Qatar, here in Thalassery, a student who loved football as much as his life, has lost an arm and is sitting in his room in tears. Sultan Siddique, a native of Thalassery Chetukunn, lost his left hand after falling while playing football. The family had filed a complaint with the Chief Minister and the Health Minister seeking action after the student who fell and broke his arm while playing football was suspended from the Thalassery General Hospital.

On the 30th of last month, Sultan Siddique broke the bones in his hand in a fall while playing on the ground near his house in Chetam Hill with his friends. Later, the family took the child to Thalassery General Hospital. The doctor on duty suggested that the x-ray machine was not working and to get the x-ray from a nearby cooperating hospital. X-rays revealed fractures in two bones in the wrist. The doctor on duty splinted the child’s arm and admitted him as the orthopedic specialist was not available.

The next day, orthopedic specialist Dr Vijumon examined him and suggested surgery. But the surgery of the student who was admitted on the 30th was carried out on the first day. After 14 days of treatment, he was referred to Kozhikode Medical College. By then the situation had become very serious. Later, the student was shifted to a private hospital.

On the 14th of this month, due to an infection, one arm was amputated below the knee. The Minister of Health, Veena George, has ordered an investigation into the incident. The minister has asked to submit the report within two days. An officer from the Health Services Directorate will investigate the incident. The minister said that strict action will be taken if any mistakes are found.
