Another’Do Not Ask Assault’ against Asian Americans in the United States occurred. According to local media such as NBC News on the 27th (local time), the incident took place near a grocery store in Queens, New York City around 2:30 pm the previous day.
In a nearby CCTV video released by the police, a man walking on the street pulled a shopping cart and hit the face of an elderly woman with his left elbow.
The old man who was assaulted while defenselessly collapsed. There were many pedestrians passing by, but the man left without paying attention.
The old man, who was identified as a 75-year-old Chinese-American, broke the bones around his nose and eyes in the incident. After receiving treatment for 8 hours in the hospital, she was discharged, but she needs additional surgery.
The woman’s son told NBC News, “My mother has lived in New York for more than 40 years.” “I think I was the target of hate crime simply because I was an Asian woman.” He said he would not identify himself for fear of retaliation.
The New York Police (NYPD) secured CCTV footage near the scene of the incident and publicly wanted a suspect, a Hispanic man in his 20s, and arrested the next day.
Police said there were 86 cases of violence against Asians this year across New York City. This is an increase of more than four times the number of cases reported in the same period last year. However, the New York police said they would investigate the case as a simple assault, not a hate crime.
