Within this week, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to discuss the Taiwan issue and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The White House National Security Council Strategic Communications Coordinator John Kirby said on the 26th (local time) that a phone call between President Biden and Xi is expected to take place within this week, and the US-China hegemony over the economy could also be included in the discussion.

So far, President Biden and President Xi have had about four phone calls. In this phone call, President Xi is expected to convey his uneasy feelings about China in relation to the recent controversial news of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

Coordinator John Kirby said, “The phone call has been scheduled for a long time.

“From the Taiwan issue to the Ukraine crisis and the U.S.-China economic supremacy competition, it will be dealt with through dialogue,” he added.

Early on, the United States did not have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan under the policy of successive governments adhering to the ‘one China’ principle. However, in accordance with the US internal ‘Taiwan Relations Act’, Taiwan has created friction and conflict with China as it provides means and methods to protect its own security.

Amid the recent controversy surrounding the news of Chairman Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, the White House emphasized that the US foreign policy stance has not changed.

Coordinator John Kirby said that because the character of the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States is in line with that of the President, Pelosi’s schedule for overseas visits is also related to US security issues.

However, Coordinator John Kirby has made it clear that Pelosi has autonomous authority to schedule overseas visits.

Coordinator John Kirby said, “The belligerent response (the Chinese government’s response to Pelosi’s overseas visit) will only escalate tensions.” He also added, “It doesn’t seem to help at all, nor is it necessary at all in the current situation.”

Recently, the Biden administration is known to be considering a plan to withdraw tariffs on China, but Coordinator John Kirby said that even this has not been decided exactly.
