Taliban confirm killing Mullah Akhunzada; Death in a suicide attack a year ago

Kabul: Taliban leader Mullah Hibatullah Akhunzada has been killed. The Taliban has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Pakistan last year. This was reported by CNN-News 18.

Amir al-Mu’minin Sheikh, a senior Taliban member, was quoted as saying that Hibatullah Akhunzada was killed in a suicide attack by Pakistani forces last year. The Taliban has been led by Mullah Hibatullah Akhunzada since 2016.

There have been many rumors that Hibatullah Akhunzada, the supreme leader of the Taliban, has never appeared in public. In addition, his failure to address the public and participate in government formation talks led to the conclusion that Akhunzada was no longer alive. This was a big discussion on social media. There were reports that the Taliban had assassinated Mullah Akhunzada over a power struggle. The new report puts an end to such discussions.

Akhunzada took over as Taliban leader in 2016 after former Taliban leader Mullah Akhtar Mansour was killed in a drone strike.
