Kabul: The Taliban has said it will not allow officials who do not grow beards into their offices. The Taliban government has instructed government employees not to shave their beards and to wear local clothing that includes long loose dresses and hats.

Officials were warned that they could no longer enter offices without following the dress code and would be fired if they did not comply. The Taliban, meanwhile, has banned women from flying without men.

Earlier, the Taliban had withdrawn its decision to open high schools for girls. Tens of thousands of girls have returned to classes since the reopening of schools in Afghanistan. But within hours, officials were asking them to go home. Authorities have not yet clarified the reason for the policy change. This was followed by the imposition of new restrictions on women.

Officials at the Ariana Afghan Airlines and Cam Air in Afghanistan said the Taliban had ordered that women traveling alone should not be allowed on board. An official, who did not want to be named, told AFP that the decision was made after a meeting between representatives of the Taliban and two airlines and airport immigration officials on Thursday. Since returning to power, the Taliban have imposed a number of restrictions restricting the freedom of women.

The Taliban have already banned inter-city road travel for women traveling alone. Since August, women in Afghanistan have been deprived of their rights for two decades. Women were excluded from most government jobs and secondary schooling and asked to dress according to their interpretation of the Qur’an.
