Taliban press conference “We will respect women’s rights” | Voice of America

At the first press conference held after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the Islamic militant group said it would respect women’s rights.

Taliban spokesman Zabihula Mujahid said at a press conference in Kabul on the 17th that he would not retaliate against those who fought against the Taliban.

Mujahid said that women’s rights will be respected within the framework of Islamic law and that women will be allowed to work and receive education.

A Taliban spokesperson, however, did not specify the level to which women’s rights would be respected, including dress discipline and social activities.

In addition, Mujahid added, “We will prevent terrorists from using their country the same way that terrorist groups such as al-Qaeda used Afghanistan in 2001 when they carried out terrorist attacks.”

Meanwhile, the Pentagon said thousands of people were communicating with the Taliban as they evacuated through Kabul Airport.

The Ministry of Defense also added that the Taliban did not engage in hostile actions at the scene.
