Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory Ships 2 Millionth Vehicle, Setting New Milestone
United States electric car manufacturer Tesla has reached a significant milestone as its factory in Shanghai, known as Gigafactory, shipped its 2 millionth vehicle today (September 6).
In a major accomplishment for the renowned automaker, Tesla’s first gigafactory outside the United States has shown remarkable growth since its construction began in January 2019. The Shanghai Factory marked its debut by delivering the first car in December of the same year.
Within a relatively short span of 30 months, the factory achieved the production of its first 1 million cars, setting the pace for another astounding achievement. The second 1 million car milestone was reached in less than 13 months, a testament to Tesla’s remarkable production speed.
According to Song Gang, senior director of manufacturing for the Shanghai Gigafactory, this increased speed is a direct result of an improved business environment in Shanghai, particularly in the Lingang Special Zone Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone.
The Shanghai Gigafactory has continued its impressive performance throughout the year, delivering over 600,000 vehicles in the initial 8 months of 2022. This figure surpasses the factory’s record total achieved in 2021. Notably, the Shanghai Gigafactory has now become Tesla’s global export hub, catering to strong car sales in the Asia-Pacific, Europe, and North America regions.
