The 5/18 fact-finding committee member… “Chun Doo-hwan, the person who returned democracy”

The phrase “Chun Doo-hwan returned democracy to the people” came out of the mouth of a 5.18 fact-finding commissioner.

Even today, the last day of Chun Doo-hwan’s funeral, the remarks that distort history and glorify the dictatorship have not ceased.

Like Roh Tae-woo, who died a month earlier, Jeon has yet to find a place to be buried.

Reporter Kun-Hwi Kim covered the story.

Lee Dong-wook, a member of the 5.18 Fact Finding Committee who visited Chun Doo-hwan’s funeral, said, “Chun has returned democracy to the people.”

“Thanks to you, now we vote to change power every five years. Isn’t he the one who returned more democracy to the people than any other government in the past?”

It was expressed as if it was the achievement of Mr. Jeon about the fact that the whole nation went out on the streets and achieved the constitutional amendment to the direct presidential system.

Commissioner Lee Dong-wook, a former monthly Chosun reporter, joined the 5.18 fact-finding committee in 2019 on the recommendation of the Liberty Korea Party.

He continued to explain 5.18 by presenting materials in front of the mortuary.

“On the day of May 18 alone, as many as 34 combat police officers suppressing the demonstration were injured. That’s why they requested military service in the afternoon and the martial law forces entered.”

It was said that the protests were intense enough to deploy martial law troops, and at the same time, when criticized that the North Korean military intervention was unfounded, conservative YouTubers at the scene protested fiercely.

While the 5th and 6th public figures such as Jang Se-dong and Park Cheol-eon kept the mortuary for four days, remarks and commotions denying history continued throughout the funeral.

In front of Mr. Jeon’s home in Yeonhui-dong, Seoul, these community groups gathered and raised their voices, saying, “It is a shame of the region that Mr. Jeon died while living in luxury here.”

“Chun Doo-hwan is dead, but it’s too late now, but we need to get it right now.”

The funeral of Mr. Jeon will be held modestly tomorrow morning in the presence of 50 people, including the bereaved family.

Like Roh Tae-woo, who died last month, the burial place of Chun has yet to be determined.

After being cremated tomorrow, Jeon’s remains will be temporarily placed at his home in Yeonhui-dong.
