The aftermath of the Gwangju apartment collapse… Difficulty in winning orders for Hyundai Industrial Development Reconstruction Complex

At 3:46 pm on the 11th at the construction site of a new apartment building in Hwajeong-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, structures such as the outer walls of the 23rd and 38th floors of the apartment collapsed, leaving 5 people missing and 2 casualties. Due to the collapse of the outer wall of Hwajeong I-Park in Seo-gu, Gwangju, voices opposing the participation of the construction company of HDC Hyundai Development Company are emerging not only in Gwangju but also in the metropolitan area reconstruction promotion complex.

According to the real estate industry on the 16th, a banner against the participation of Hyundai Development Company’s construction company was posted at the entrance of Hyundai Apartment in Gwanyang-dong, Anyang-si, Gyeonggi-do.

The placard, posted by the ‘Gwanyang Hyundai Seniors Group Who Wants a Safe Apartment,’ reads, ‘I will return the Hyundai Industrial Development deposit, so please leave’ and ‘We cannot entrust our property and life to Hyeonsan’.

It is said that the banner was put up by some union members, not by the reconstruction union.

It is known that the union will hold a general meeting of members on the 5th of next month and vote to select a construction company. Hyundai Development Company is known to have worked hard to win this project for a long time, but the accident has made it impossible to guarantee that it will win the order due to aggravated public opinion.

Due to the collapse of I-Park in Gwangju, the situation is spreading rapidly, with Hyundai Development Company moving to exclude prefecture production from existing contract complexes, and some apartments even responding to the ‘i-Park’ brand.

Immediately after the accident, the Reconstruction Association of Unam 3 Complex in Buk-gu, Gwangju notified Hyundai Development Company, which was selected as the contractor, to consider canceling the construction contract. Some members of the ‘DH First I-Park’, which will be built through the reconstruction of Jugong Apartments in Gaepo 1 Complex, Gangnam-gu, Seoul, are arguing that the brand name of I-Park should be removed.

In the redevelopment project site of Hakdong 4 District, Dong-gu, Gwangju, where the ‘demolition building collapse disaster’ occurred last year, discussions are expected to begin with the recovery of Hyundai Industrial Development’s construction rights as an agenda item at the general meeting of union members.

Within the Hakdong District 4 Association, there has been a steady demand for the replacement of the construction company after the collapse of the demolished building in June last year, which killed 17 people.
