The death toll from a volcanic eruption on the Indonesian island of Java continues to rise.

More than 40 people have died or gone missing so far, but a mother has been found buried in lava with her baby in her arms.

Reporter Jeongyeon Shin will tell you.

A huge cloud of volcanic ash rose and covered the sky in an instant.

Surprised residents rush down the mountain in vehicles and motorcycles.

The volcanic ash erupted as far as 11km away, turning 11 nearby villages into black-and-white photos.

The hot lava flowed and destroyed more than 3,000 houses, roads and bridges.

“Less than 10 minutes after I escaped, the lava hit the house. Now only the roof remains.”

Buried in volcanic ash as tall as an adult, the truck was barely recognizable by the driver’s seat, and only the roof of the house was exposed.

About 40 people were killed or missing in the explosion.

As it rains, the volcanic ash turns into heavy mud, making rescue and search operations difficult.

“There must be several people buried here, but I can’t find them. Only one body was found.”

As additional volcanic eruptions occurred, the slow search operation was also halted.

Local meteorologists have warned that continued rain could cause the slopes around the crater to collapse, resulting in landslides.

“People in nearby areas must remain vigilant as the potential threat of the volcano still exists.”

In case of an emergency, the area within a 5km radius of the volcano has been sealed off, and about 1,300 residents are staying in shelters.

The Indonesian government has decided to provide relief supplies, such as food and clothing, while searching for a site to build a new home for the victims.
