The field is different, the heart is one; Inaki for Ghana, Nico for Spain | Sports | Deshabhimani

Twenty nine years ago. Fed up with hunger, Felix Williams and Maria Arthur decided to leave their native country. Arriving in Europe in search of a better life from the country of Ghana in Africa. That was the couple’s goal. Maria is pregnant. Only a small amount of money in hand.

The trip was in trucks. He crossed the Sahara desert barefoot in the blazing sun. They crossed the Mediterranean Sea and reached Europe’s dreamland. The migration was to Spain. Life in the Basque Country, with black refugees, did not start as expected. It took all the work to change the hunger and the bed. In the meantime, the eldest son Inaki Williams was born.

He depended on football to end his boring life. Inaki became a star on the streets of the Basque Country at a young age. Inaki also brought Kunjanian Niko, who was eight years younger than him. After more than two decades, Inaki and Niko are on the pitch when World Cup football is staged in Qatar. That too in two different national shirts.

Inaki Williams is batting for Ghana following the legacy of his forefathers. The twenty-year-old is Athletic Bilbao’s top scorer. Played for the Spanish junior team. He also represented the senior team once in 2016. Didn’t call later. With this, he decided to play for Ghana last June. Debuted to Nicaragua in September. He only played twice for Ghana before being included in the World Cup squad. Inaki holds the record for most consecutive appearances in the Spanish league. Played 203 games without injury or suspension.
Nico is a winger for Bilbao. The 20-year-old was unexpectedly included in Luis Enrique’s 24-man Spanish squad. Spain under 18 and 21 wore the shirt.

This is the second time in the history of the World Cup that brothers have appeared for two teams. Jerome Boateng from Germany and Kevin Prince Boateng from Ghana played in 2010 and 2014. Both times they came face to face. Spain and Ghana are in different groups in Qatar. Only after reaching the quarter finals will Inaki and Niko face each other directly. There is a lot of history of brothers playing for one team. This time Ghana’s Andre Ayew – Jordan Ayew and Belgium’s Eden Hazard – Torgan Hazard’s brothers are in Qatar.
