[헤럴드경제=구본혁 기자] A Korean research team has developed the world’s first severe COVID-19 animal infection model. It is expected that great progress will be made in the development of therapeutics, vaccines, medical devices, and functional foods for the settlement of the With Corona era.

The Korea Basic Science Research Institute announced on the 28th that a research team led by Dr. Hye-jong Jeong of the Gwangju Center and Professor Sung-chul Hong of Chonbuk National University have developed a hamster infection model that exhibits severe COVID-19 symptoms as they are.

Although mild COVID-19 often shows symptoms similar to a cold and heals spontaneously, severe COVID-19 has a high fatality rate and causes serious sequelae such as brain fog, chronic fatigue, and loss of smell even after a full recovery.

As a result of conducting research on the susceptibility and genetics and pathology of the COVID-19 virus on various small animals, the research team developed the SH101 hamster model that represents severe human COVID-19 infection as it is. When the SH101 hamster model developed this time was infected with the Corona 19 virus, severe symptoms of COVID-19 infection in humans such as post-direction pneumonia, fever, and secondary infection appeared as it is.

If vaccines and therapeutics are developed through this hamster, the efficacy evaluation results are clear and the clinical trial period can be significantly reduced. It is also possible to identify the cause of severe COVID-19, which is expected to lead to the development of more innovative vaccines and treatments.

In this study, Dr. Hye-Jong Jeong’s research team conducted a study on the genetic lineage of hamsters and the pathological study caused by the Corona 19 virus in the hamster’s body.

The results of this study were published in the latest issue of the international scientific journal Virulance.

Dr. Hye-Jong Jeong said, “The aging animal growth facility contributed a great deal to being able to develop an animal infection model that is identical to the severe COVID-19 symptoms that appear in humans. Since the evaluation period is also very short, it will be able to actively contribute to the development of COVID-19 research at home and abroad in the future.”
