TBILisi (Reuters) – Georgia’s parliament on Wednesday rejected a bill on “foreign agents” that sparked three days of violent protests.

Earlier, the ruling Georgia Dream party announced it would withdraw the bill.

The bill would have required groups that receive 20 percent or more of their funding from abroad to register as foreign agents, and would have imposed heavy fines on groups that are not registered.

Opponents say the bill is similar to a law enacted in Russia in 2012 that was used to suppress speech. He was concerned that his future goal of joining the European Union (EU) would be a long way off.
