Recently, Bloomberg reported that Apple is accelerating the development of self-driving cars, and the ultimate goal is to realize a car that supports self-driving.

The development of Apple Car (tentative name) started in 2014, and the project has undergone many adjustments since then. Earlier online rumors claimed that Apple abandoned the development of a complete self-driving car plan, focusing on the automatic driving system. But in 2020, Apple once again returned the development goal to a complete car.

Apple’s current Apple Car development has two routes, one is the current mainstream vehicles with limited automatic driving capabilities, and the other is a highly technical vehicle with fully automatic driving functions that does not require driver intervention. As a leader in the technology industry, Apple’s Apple Car team chose the second most difficult route under the leadership of Kevin Lynch. Currently Apple Car has completed the main development work to drive the car processor.

As the brain of autonomous vehicles, the on-board processor of Apple Car is the core component of Apple’s internal development. It is composed of a large number of neural network engines to ensure that the powerful performance can afford to process the data required for autonomous driving. Strong performance will inevitably lead to high heat, which also requires the development of a complex heat dissipation system.

Apple has no experience in car manufacturing, and it is always a “white paper” in the automotive industry. Therefore, to make a car, it needs to cooperate with a real car manufacturer. Due to various reasons, Apple decided to produce cars in the United States after negotiating with many manufacturers.

According to Apple’s vision, its self-driving vehicle is an electric vehicle without a wheel and a throttle, and Apple is currently discussing specific plans. There will be an iPad-like touch device in the central control position of the car to communicate and interact with the driver.

According to Apple’s vision, Apple Car cars will be safer than cars made by Waymo and Tesla, and there will even be redundant and fail-safe devices to avoid failures.

Apple plans to launch self-driving cars before 2025. For Apple, the first thing to solve is to develop a complete self-driving system. If the development phase is not smooth enough, Apple is likely to postpone the plan, or even change the goals of the Apple Car plan again.
