Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that no police force can break the higher education sector in Kerala. The Chief Minister was inaugurating a public convention in Thiruvananthapuram against the actions of Governor Arif Muhammad Khan.
“University excellence makes many people uncomfortable. RSS and Sangh Parivar are behind this. Those who sacked the Vice Chancellors (VCs) of Kerala do not know what is the situation in Central Universities?. Academic excellence, not politics, is the criterion for hiring VCs. The office of the Chancellor is not constitutional but is given by the University Act. Action should be taken against VC as per university law. Don’t think you can defend the Chancellor’s status as Governor.
The Chief Minister said that he will not allow anyone to usurp the power of the Legislative Assembly and accused the Governor of trying to become a parallel government. “The governor has an excuse that he is with the judiciary as well. The governor is taking a public stance that he will not sign bills. The governor also says he will withdraw his favor to the minister. This is the government elected by the people to do all this. The Governor’s moves are such that the architects of the constitution did not even think of them.
The Prime Minister mocked the Governor for not signing the bill. “The governor says he won’t sign the bill and the next moment he didn’t read it. Is there any divine reason to say that you will not sign without reading it?” asked the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister added that the governor should not panic thinking that he has all the power.
