At least 1,356 people have been killed and more than 3,419 injured in Syria after a series of powerful earthquakes in southeastern Turkey shook the wider region early Monday. The earthquake was particularly felt in the cities of Idlib, Aleppo, Hama, Latakia and Raqqa, where numerous buildings collapsed.
At the same time, according to the latest information, in Turkey, at least 2,316 people died, and 13,293 were injured in the earthquakes that hit the southern parts of Turkey today, Anadolia reports.
The representative of the Emergency Situations Administration of Turkey (AFAD) Orhan Tatar presented the latest information on the number of victims in the earthquakes, with the epicenter in the southern Turkish city of Kahramanmaras. Tatar confirmed that he was the death toll increased by 554 compared to the earlier report, which increased the total number of dead to 2,316. The number of injured increased to 13,293, while 6,217 buildings collapsed in the earthquakes.
AFAD also confirmed that so far, 7,340 people have been saved under the ruins in rescue operations.
An earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale hit the south of Turkey this morning. The epicenter of the earthquake was registered in Pazarcik district in Kahramanmaras, Turkey. The provinces of Gaziantep, Sanliurfa, Diyarbakır, Adana, Adiyaman, Malatya, Osmaniye, Hatay and Kilis were severely affected by the earthquake. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Syria, and ground shaking was also felt in Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and other regions.

Numerous rescue teams are still on the ground and continue to search for survivors under the rubble in several Turkish cities.
