A sudden move by the Philippines has resulted in the removal of China’s floating barriers that were placed around Scarborough Reef, a disputed territory in the South China Sea. Foreign media, including AFP, reported that the Philippine Coast Guard successfully completed the obstacle removal operation on the afternoon of the 25th.
China had previously deployed coast guard ships and implemented a floating barrier measuring about 300 meters in length around Scarborough Reef. However, the Philippine Coast Guard discovered and promptly responded to this development during a marine patrol on the 22nd.
Eduardo Ano, the Philippine national security adviser, stated, “The barriers set up by China go against the rights of our fishermen. We will utilize every means possible to remove them.”
China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on the other hand, maintains that they only took legal action to expel Philippine ships that approached their territorial waters. The Scarborough Reef area has long been at the center of a contentious territorial dispute between the Philippines and China.
China’s claim of about 90% of the South China Sea, as outlined by its nine U-shaped lines, has caused tensions with neighboring countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan. These countries dispute China’s expansive territorial waters and aim to protect their own maritime interests.

(Seoul = Yonhap News) The Philippines suddenly moved the floating barriers placed by China around Scarborough Reef in the South China Sea, a disputed territory.
According to foreign media such as AFP, the Philippine Coast Guard announced that it had successfully completed the removal of obstacles on the afternoon of the 25th.
Previously, China moved coast guard ships and placed a floating barrier about 300 meters long around Scarborough Reef.
The Philippine Coast Guard, which discovered this during a marine patrol on the 22nd, announced its intention to respond directly.
“The barriers set up by China go against the rights of our fishermen,” Eduardo Ano, Philippine national security adviser, said in a statement. “We will use every means possible to get rid of them.”
On the other hand, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains that it only took legal action to drive out Philippine ships that approached its territorial waters.
The Scarborough Reef area is the subject of a fierce territorial dispute between the Philippines and China.
China has drawn nine U-shaped lines (nine dashed lines) in the South China Sea and claims about 90% of the area within it as its territorial waters, causing friction with neighboring countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, and Taiwan.
