The Power of Patience: Jang Je-won’s ‘A Brave Bird Hides Its Claws’ Philosophy

Representative Jang Je-won Shares Proverbial Quote

On National Foundation Day, Jang Je-won, a lawmaker from the People’s Power Party, took to his social media to share a thought-provoking quote. The message, received from Monk Bangjang of Tongdosa Temple and head of the Jogye Order, reads, “A brave bird hides its claws.” This phrase, ‘猛禽陰爪執弓待兔’ (Maenggeumeumjo Jipgungdaeto) in Korean, implies being prepared and patient, akin to holding a bow and waiting for the right opportunity. Expressing his gratitude, Rep. Jang thanked the enlightened monk for his meaningful teachings.

Rep. Jang, known for his close ties to President Yoon, had previously stated in August of last year, following the establishment of Yoon Seok-yeol’s government, that he would not seek any appointed public office within the administration. While he supported the election of Representative Kim Ki-hyun during the national convention for choosing the leadership of the People Power Party last March, he did not assume any party position thereafter. According to a representative from the ruling party, Jang has been recognized for his intention to act as a bridge between the party and the President’s office, with an emphasis on the role of General Secretary Lee Cheolgyu.

It appears that Rep. Jang’s citation of this proverb represents his patient approach towards waiting for the opportune moment to make his mark.

On the 3rd, the National Foundation Day, Power People Party lawmaker Jang Je-won posted on his SNS, “A brave bird hides its claws.” This is an introduction to a quote received from Monk Bangjang of Tongdosa Temple, Seongpa, head of the Jogye Order.

The writing given by the monk Seongpa, saying, “I wrote it while thinking about Rep. Jang,” is ‘猛禽陰爪執弓待兔’ (Maenggeumeumjo Jipgungdaeto). Rep. Jang said, “A brave bird hides its claws. “It means holding the bow and waiting for the rabbit,” he said, adding, “I am extremely grateful to the great monk for his teachings.”

Rep. Jang, who is considered a key close associate of President Yoon, said in August last year, right after the launch of Yoon Seok-yeol’s government, “I will not hold appointed public office in the government of Yoon Seok-yeol .” At the national convention to elect the leadership of the People Power Party last March, he supported the election of Representative Kim Ki-hyun, but did not hold a party position thereafter. According to a ruling party official, Representative Jang is known to have told those around him, “General Secretary Lee Cheolgyu will play the role of bridging the party and Yongsan (Office of the President).”

Rep. Jang’s presentation of this article appears to be an expression of his will to ‘wait quietly for his time.’
