The Return of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, Now as a Documentary

The highly anticipated return of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show has taken a different approach this time. After a gap of five years, the iconic event has made a comeback as a documentary.
According to sources from CNN and the Washington Post (WP) on March 26th, the documentary titled ‘The Tour 23’ has been released exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, known for its enchanting runway filled with slender models in luxurious underwear, held immense popularity from 1995 to 2018. The annual spectacle boasted grand stages adorned with live performances from top pop stars. Renowned models like Heidi Klum, Gisele Bündchen, and Miranda Kerr graced the show as ‘Victoria’s Secret’s Angels’.
However, the show faced substantial criticism for perpetuating the objectification of women and promoting the harmful notion that only thin bodies are beautiful. This stirred negative consequences, including a decline in viewership and sales. By the end of 2018, the show was dissolved amidst accusations of its association with billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein, who had committed heinous sexual crimes against minors.
The newly released documentary captures collections presented by independent designers across four vibrant cities: Lagos in Nigeria, Tokyo in Japan, Bogota in Colombia, and London in the UK.
Former Victoria’s Secret angels Naomi Campbell and Adriana Lima make appearances in the film, emphasizing the brand’s transformation from its previous image.
Notably, the documentary spotlights designer Michaela Starck, who defies traditional standards by featuring underwear designs that embrace and accentuate belly fat, instead of concealing it.
Stark reflects on the impact the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show had on her during her high school years, stating, “There was always this pressure not to eat anything after watching the show.”
On her Instagram, Stark shared a photo of a plus-size model adorned with angel wings, stating, “I wanted to prove that angels can represent all women. It’s a way to overcome my childhood insecurities and body dysmorphia. I am grateful for this opportunity,” she expressed sincerely.
Prior to the documentary’s premiere, it showcases the works of 20 diverse creators and artists, including female designers, filmmakers, and dancers from each featured country.
In addition to the documentary, Victoria’s Secret is reportedly developing a new funding initiative to support female artists and entrepreneurs.
