SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Springfield police officer is recovering after being injured and injured at a suspected Wednesday night.
Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood recognized the suspect as a 39-year-old person t Ruben Barrero and the official as Greg Vatrano.
She said the two were engaged in a violent struggle on Island Pond Road after Barrero had deliberately sent his Vermont home home and ran away.
"Official Vatrano met in the preamble with a high punching offer," explained Clapprood. "Both of them began to struggle violently on the ground with Mr Barrero on top of the Vatrano Office. He was delivering a blouse to the officer's head and body."
The officers later discovered that Barrero Vatrano breached the chest with a kitchen knife. The knife had gone through a shirt and Vatrano vest, but it did not get into his skin because of the trauma plate that was located inside his bulletproof vest.
Clapprood said that Vatrano suffered a broken hand and cuts and bruises in the violent struggle with Barrero, but he is recovering and is in good spirits.
In addition to arson, Barrero was charged with armed aggression with attempted murder, two assault signs and a police officer's battery, and rescuing arrest.
Mayor of Springfield Domenic Sarno commented on the incident at a news conference with Clapprood on Thursday morning and wished Vatrano a quick recovery.
"It is there to protect the safety of our residents and made his job," said Sarno. "As the other officials did, to take this person out of the streets so that he would not burn down a person's house, so he wouldn't try to murder and murder one of our police."
