At the ‘2021 LA Auto Show’ held at the Los Angeles Convention Center in the United States on the 17th (local time), Hyundai Motor Company unveiled its large electric SUV concept car ‘SEVEN’ for the first time. It is the third model of the dedicated electric vehicle brand IONIQ, and is scheduled to be released as the IONIQ 7 in 2024.

Hyundai Motor Company completed the design of a new form of ‘Sport Utility Electric Vehicle (SUEV)’ by applying E-GMP, a dedicated electric vehicle platform. It is completely different from the typical SUV design. A single door on the driver’s side and a ‘coach door’ that opens as if the front and rear doors open to the sides on the passenger side were applied.

The interior of Seven has a long wheelbase of 3200 mm and a flat floor that extends to the third row, creating a premium lounge-like appearance. In the driver’s seat, an electronic transmission ‘control stick’ that is normally stored and lifted up when needed was installed. With two chairs and one bench seat that can rotate 180 degrees and move back and forth, you can freely arrange the seats. The mobile console ‘Universal Island’ with a 27-inch display was designed like a home appliance.

Hyundai applied a fast charging system to the Seven. With 350kW class ultra-quick charging, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% within 20 minutes. It aims to travel up to 482 km on a single charge. There is also a V2L function that supplies general power to the outside of the vehicle.

Kia also unveiled the EV9, a large electric SUV concept car, at the LA Auto Show. The EV9 is expected to be released in 2023 following the EV6 released this year. Like EV6, it is designed based on E-GMP.

The Concept EV9 has a total length of 4930 mm, a width of 2055 mm, a height of 1790 mm, and a wheelbase of 3100 mm. It aims to travel up to 482 km on a single charge. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to charge the battery from 10% to 80% in 350kW class ultra-quick charging.

The Concept EV9 has a strong and solid impression side design. The front part developed the ‘Tiger Nose’ design of the internal combustion engine model into a ‘Digital Tiger Face’ suitable for electric vehicles. The interior is designed like an open lounge. Considering both the driver’s and front passenger’s seats, a 27-inch ultra-wide display is installed.

There are also three interior modes that can change the direction of the seat according to driving and stopping conditions. ‘Active mode’ is a normal seat arrangement, with all seats in rows 1, 2, and 3 facing forward. ‘Pose mode’ folds the second row into a table and allows you to sit in the first and third rows and have a conversation. In ‘Enjoy Mode’, you can relax while looking at the outside of the vehicle by turning the third row 180 degrees.

North American Car of the Year Finalist

Hyundai Motor plans to accelerate its entry into the US market with electric vehicles and SUVs. Ioniq 5 and Genesis GV70 were selected as finalists in the ‘2022 North American Car of the Year’ on the 18th, respectively, in the utility category and Santa Cruz in the truck category. Following the ‘2021 North American Car of the Year’, three models were nominated for the final two years in a row, showing a changed brand status in the United States, the largest battlefield in the global automobile market.
