The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) on Friday (25th) ordered a ban on the sale of new equipment by Chinese carriers such as Huawei and ZTE in the US, continuing years of efforts to restrict Chinese companies from accessing US telecommunications networks.

In addition to Huawei and ZTE, the FCC has also named surveillance equipment makers Hikvision, Dahua Technology and wireless equipment maker Hytera.

The FCC said the order was required under the Secure Devices Act signed into law by President Joe Biden last November, which seeks to prevent any communications equipment that poses a risk to national security from being authorized by the FCC.

“The FCC is committed to protecting the national security of the United States by ensuring that unreliable communications devices are not authorized for use within our borders, and we continue to do so,” said County Council Chairman Flint, Jessica Rosenworcel.

The FCC unanimously decided that these devices posed a risk to data security, and the decision to ban the products was eventually passed with 4 votes in favor and 0 votes against. FCC officials have also recently called for restrictions on TikTok’s US operations due to concerns that Chinese authorities could obtain data on US users through video-sharing apps.
