The wife of a drug lord from a beauty pageant, helped her husband escape, but eventually…

yunhap newsFollowing Mexico’s infamous drug lord Joaquin Guzman (aka El Chapo), his wife was also sentenced to life in an American prison.

The U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., on the 30th (local time) sentenced Emma Coronel Icepuro, 32, to three years in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering charges.

Coronel, a native of the local beauty pageant, married Guzman on her 18th birthday, and they have twin daughters.

Guzman, who led the Mexican Sinaloa cartel and dominated the U.S. and Mexican drug markets, was arrested after two escapes and extradited to the U.S., where he was sentenced to life in prison in a U.S. court in 2019.

Coronel, who appeared several times during her husband’s trial, was arrested in February at Dulles Airport, Virginia, on charges of conspiracy in drug trafficking.

Prosecutors on the same day described Coronel as “a cog in a big wheel,” and said that although his role in the Sinaloa cartel was modest, he played an important role in helping her husband escape a second prison in 2015.

It is known that Coronel secretly delivered a GPS-equipped watch into the prison when Guzman used a tunnel to escape from a Mexican prison at the time.

On the same day, Judge Rudolph Contrerus sentenced Coronel to a shorter sentence than the four-year sentence the prosecution had requested, considering that Coronel married Guzman at a very young age and pleaded guilty shortly after arrest.

After the sentencing, Coronel asked for forgiveness in court, saying “I express my sincere regrets for everything I have done”, and the judge said, “I hope to raise the twins in a different environment than before,” AFP news agency reported.
