The world’s largest sapphire is in the Guinness Book of World Records

Colombo | The world’s largest indigo cluster from Sri Lanka has been inducted into the Guinness Book of World Records. The sapphire is called the Serendipity Sapphire. It weighs more than 300 kilograms. The sapphire was discovered in July 2021.

The Gubelin Gem Lab in Switzerland certifies it as the largest sapphire cluster. The sapphire was discovered by workers digging a well at a jeweler’s house in the Ratnapura area, 100 km southeast of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.

Ratnapura is an area rich in gems, where residents have accidentally discovered some of the most precious gems in the world. This place is also known as the Gem Capital of Sri Lanka. Sapphires and other precious gems are also exported here.

Since its discovery five months ago, many international agencies have been interested in buying it from the government. The Sri Lankan government recently announced that it was in talks with a Dubai-based company that had offered $ 100 million for the world’s largest blue sapphire cluster. They did not come to an agreement because the government wanted to auction at a higher price. The minister said it would be taken to the UK for a cluster auction currently in Switzerland.
