First Wave of Passenger Travel Begins
The Yangtze River Delta Railway is projected to accommodate more than 3 million passengers today, marking the commencement of the first wave of passenger travel in the afternoon.
In efforts to combat the surge in passenger demand during the National Day Golden Week, the China Railway Shanghai Group Co., Ltd. has reported that the Yangtze River Delta Railway transported over 2.5 million passengers on September 27, exceeding the numbers from the same period in 2019 by an impressive 500,000, equating to a significant 25% rise. Today, it is anticipated that the railway will transport over 3 million passengers, with peak travel expected in the afternoon.
Expectations for the National Day Golden Week
Spanning from September 27 to October 8, the National Day Golden Week transit period encompasses 12 days. Throughout this duration, the Yangtze River Delta Railway predicts an estimated 37 million passengers, resulting in an average daily passenger flow of over 3 million individuals. Ticket sales data suggests a dense flow of passengers towards Beijing, Hubei, Henan, Hunan, Shandong, Jiangxi, and other areas within the Yangtze River Delta. In addition, the flow of people between populous cities such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Hefei, as well as various tourist destinations, has substantially increased. Furthermore, the passenger occupancy rate for prominent high-speed railway lines like Beijing-Shanghai, Shanghai-Nanjing, Shanghai-Hangzhou, Nanjing-Hangzhou, Hangzhou-Shenzhen, and Ning’an has already exceeded 90%.
Measures Taken to Accommodate the Passenger Surge
To cope with the peak passenger flow, the Yangtze River Delta Railway Department implemented several measures on September 28. These included the addition of 442 passenger trains, the reconfiguration of 244 EMU trains, and the introduction of 152 normal speed vehicles to bolster capacity. Particular emphasis has been placed on strengthening transportation between the Yangtze River Delta and regions such as Central and South China, the Central Plains, Northwest China, and North China. This involves enhancing routes from Shanghai to Zhengzhou, Xi’an, Wuhan, Changsha, Jiujiang, Guangzhou, Zhuhai, and more. The Hangzhou route has also undergone improvements, connecting to Zhengzhou, Nanchang, Ganzhou, Hankou, and other destinations. Similarly, the capacity for travel between Nanjing and Changsha, Wuhan, and other cities, as well as popular tourist cities within the Yangtze River Delta region, has been increased.
