The young man was returning home after being hacked to death by an explosive device

Police have intensified their probe into the death of a youth in the Alappuzha Chathanad blast. The deceased has been identified as Kannan alias Chathanad Kilianparambu Arunkumar, accused in several criminal cases. Three people are in police custody in connection with an earlier clash between the two gangs.

Kannan, accused in several criminal cases, was killed when an explosive device exploded around 8 last night. Two goons had clashed in Chathanad yesterday afternoon. Following the clash, Kannan went in search of Rahul and got on his bike and stabbed Rahul’s friend Manu. When he returned, his bike overturned and he was killed by an explosive device in his hand. Kannan is accused in ten cases, including a murder and assault on a police officer. He was convicted in a drug trafficking case and was killed while completing the procedures for imprisoning him under the Kappa Act.

Police have registered a case of unnatural death. The body of the slain Kannan was buried posthumously at 7 pm today. Rahul, who was earlier in Kannan’s gang, later broke up with Kannan. Tom, Mirash and Nafsal have been taken into custody in connection with yesterday afternoon’s clash. Police are waiting for the results of a chemical test to determine what type of explosive was detonated.
