This is the power that surpasses even the desktop, HP Omen 17-ck2017TX

“Omen shines bright!” “This is not serious” HP’s flagship gaming laptop, the Omen, is about to transform itself in line with the battle against next-generation gaming laptops. It has an Intel Core processor of the 13th generation and RTX 40 series. Thanks to this, Omen has an alarming performance that compares to a high-performance gaming desktop.

HP’s best gaming laptop, the Omen 17

The phrase ‘Only your skills prove you’ is Omen’s slogan. In the world of the game, only skills prove your worth beyond family, academic background, property and appearance. Omen helps bring out those skills 100%. The craftsman doesn’t blame the tool, but if you give the craftsman good tools, the results are great.

The Omen 17, which is in charge of the 17-inch gaming laptop in the Omen line, quickly made its identity known through a brief presentation on the official website. “I don’t really need a gaming desktop. This laptop is enough.” The phrase “adequate” meant that it provided an environment similar to a high-performance gaming desktop. The 12th generation Intel Core processor family was like this, and this 13th generation Intel Core processor family has the same characteristics.

The HP Omen 17-ck2017TX (hereinafter Omen 17-ck2017TX) to be introduced this time is a 17.3-inch gaming laptop that incorporates the advantages of a high-performance gaming desktop system. It has a Core i9-13900HX, a GeForce RTX 4080, a mechanical keyboard, and high-performance speakers. The memory is also DDR5 32GB 5200MHz, and the SSD is NVMe 1TB.

The Core i9-13900HX is the same as the Core i9-13900K in core count only. It contains 8 P cores and 16 E cores. The P-core maximum clock is 5.4 GHz, and the E-core maximum clock is 3.9 GHz. Cache memory is 36 MB. In terms of performance, it is as good as a high-performance desktop processor. Only Geekbench’s multi-core score is higher than the Core i7-13700K.

High-end gaming laptops should support high TGP and have a cooling solution that can handle it. The HP Omen 17-ck2017TX meets this point. The GPU, RTX 4080, has a TGP of 175W.

Non-Optimus settings can be set via the Omen Gaming Hub. In the graphics switcher menu of the Omen Gaming Hub, you can set automatic selection, Nvidia GPU only, and Optimus. If you select Nvidia GPU only, only RTX 4080 can be used.

In addition, the display is also optimized for gaming. The refresh rate is 240Hz on the IPS QHD panel (2560×1440). The response time is 3ms, so there is little afterimage.

Implementation of a high performance desktop gaming system

The Omen 17-ck2017TX is a high-end gaming laptop. High-end gaming laptops generally follow flashy designs. In that regard, the design of the Omen 17-ck2017TX is comfortable. It doesn’t have a particularly unconventional look, but that doesn’t mean it’s flat out like a mainstream gaming laptop. To put it simply, it doesn’t look cheap.

What about size and weight? The size is 397.19x262x07x27mm. It weighs 2.766 kg. It can be seen as an average configuration among 17-inch gaming laptops. Rather, there is no doubt about his performance. If the size of a high-end gaming laptop is very thin, you might think that the TGP could be very low, but the Omen 17 is not like that, and it can be seen that the focus is on high-performance operation.

The display is 16:9 aspect ratio with QHD (2560×1440) resolution. IPS wide viewing angle panel, 3ms response time, 240Hz refresh rate, suitable for games. The color gamut is 100% sRGB, which is suitable for web design work. In addition, it has an eye protection function. Eyesafe certified blue light blocking function and anti-glare function. It didn’t freak me out even when I used it under fluorescent lights. For the same reason, my eyes did not hurt even when I played the game for a long time.

The speaker is a dual speaker, and various audio technologies are installed. Bang & Olufsen Audio, DTS: X Ultra, HP Sound Boost. By applying DTS:X Ultra technology, audio optimized for video is implemented.

Connectivity ports include USB4 Type-C Thunderbolt4 x1 (PD Charge, 40Gbps, DisplayPort 1.4, HP Sleep & Charge), SuperSpeed USB Type-A (5Gbps, HP Sleep & Charge) x1, SuperSpeed USB Type-A (5Gbps) )) x2, RJ45 x1, AC smart pin x1, headphone and microphone combo x1, HDMI 2.1 x1, miniDisplayPort x1, multi-format SD media card reader configuration x1. Type-C is easier to connect gaming gear by increasing the Type-A port instead of leaving Thunderbolt 4 as one.

In such an environment, the keyboard doesn’t really need gaming equipment. It has a mechanical keyboard based on an optical switch. I think it should be described as a low profile optical axis, but the sense of difference is very good and the response speed is very fast. If it is a special issue, the tenkey part on the right side is excluded and the macro key is placed on the left side. Macro keys range from P1 to P6 and can be set via the Omen Gaming Hub.

I actually tried to use that keyboard. It takes a little time to get used to because it’s a layout that’s hard to see on a laptop, but once I got used to it, I was able to use it comfortably. In addition, normal size is the right shift. The feeling there is quite good. I didn’t get tired even after playing for a long time, and there is an intense taste even when playing games. In addition, the RGB effect can be set in Omen Light Studio, and the effect implemented with individual RGB is quite spectacular.

The cooling solution is the Omen Tempest cooling system. The vents are on three sides. FYI, the adapter is 330W, so the GPU TGP is set high, but the Omen 17 has a well-equipped cooling system, so it can be used without problems. For information, the battery has a capacity of 83 Whr. After putting it in battery saver mode, I was able to use it for about X hours.

For wireless LAN, Killer ax Wi-Fi 6E AX211 is supported. Bluetooth is v5.3. The storage device is a 1TB NVMe configuration.

The Omen 17-ck2017TX can use the Omen Gaming Hub. The Omen Gaming Hub can set laptop undervolting, performance management, RGB backlight settings, network booster, and more. Unlike current gaming laptops, you can change detailed settings like undervolting. Users who are familiar with gaming laptops can push performance to the limit.

If you want high performance, the Omen 17 is a good choice

Gaming laptops may have performance differences depending on TGP settings and cooling solutions, even if they have the same components. In that regard, it can be seen that the Omen 17-ck2017TX brings out the performance of the Core i9-13900HX and the RTX 4080 without any compromise. As far as performance goes, that’s for sure.
