Police arrested a ward office official who embezzled more than 10 billion won in public funds. Police are planning to apply for an arrest warrant for this official soon.

The Gangdong Police Station in Seoul announced on the 25th that at around 8:50 pm on the 24th, Kim was arrested in the parking lot of the residence of the chief officer of the Gangdong-gu Office.

Kim is accused of embezzling 11.5 billion won of the Gangdong-gu resource recycling center construction project budget dozens of times from December 2019 to February last year into his account (business embezzlement under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Economic Crimes). Of the total embezzlement of 11.5 billion won, 3.8 billion won was refilled into the ward office account, and the actual amount of damage was estimated to be about 7.7 billion won. According to the ward office, the resource recycling center is expected to be completed in 2024, with a total project cost of 232.7 billion won.

Kang Dong-gu recently recognized Kim’s embezzlement and filed a complaint with the police on the 23rd, and the police who received the complaint barred Kim from leaving the country.

The police plan to apply for an arrest warrant for Kim in the near future. A police official said, “The reason why the ward office found out about the embezzlement so late will be revealed in a future investigation.”
