Thousands Rally in Derna Demanding Accountability for Government’s Inadequate Response to Disaster

Derna, Libya – In a historically significant turn of events, a massive anti-government protest unfolded in Derna, located in northeastern Libya. The demonstration, prompted by widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s lackluster response to a devastating flood that claimed thousands of lives, saw residents uniting in a call for justice.
On the 18th local time, thousands of indignant Derna residents assembled in front of the iconic Sabah Mosque, elevating their collective voice against the perceived incompetence of their government. Demanding accountability from those responsible, the demonstrators passionately demanded justice and punishment.
Chants reverberated through the crowd, with incensed protesters voicing their discontent by shouting slogans such as ‘Execute thieves and traitors,’ specifically pointing fingers at Speaker of the House Aguila Saleh and the National Assembly. These figures found themselves at the center of public resentment.
Matters escalated as some residents set fire to the residence of Derna Mayor al-Ghaiti, further symbolizing their frustration and anger.
In an official statement, Derna’s residents implored the authorities to swiftly investigate the disaster and bring those accountable to justice. Additionally, they appealed to the United Nations, urging them to intervene and spearhead the reconstruction efforts in the Derna area, providing much-needed support and compensation for the extensive damages suffered.
