“Carbon neutral blah blah blah, better rebuild bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla bla blah green economy — these are the so-called world leaders. It’s nice to hear, but so far it hasn’t acted. Our hope is to the point of drowning in their empty promises.”
Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg (18) gave this speech at the ‘Youth Climate Summit’ held in Milan, Italy on the 28th (local time). It strongly criticized the empty climate promises of world leaders in response to climate change.
In a speech that day, Thunberg imitated “better rebuild bla bla bla bla”, referring to US President Joe Biden’s promise of ‘better rebuild’. French President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing the response to climate change, said, “We don’t have another planet,” and mocked that “there is no bla bla planet.”
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said, “Climate change is not an expensive and politically correct green movement,” and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “To fight climate change requires innovation, cooperation and will.” “Of course, constructive discussions are necessary, but where did they bring us with only bla bla bla bla bla blah for 30 years?”
He continued, “We can no longer stand still with the decisions of those in power,” he said.
About 400 youth activists from 190 countries, including Thunberg and Vanessa Nakate of Uganda, attended the Youth Climate Summit, which started at the United Nations Headquarters in New York in 2019. At their meeting, they discuss energy conversion, nature conservation, and educational methods for creating a climate-conscious society.
