NASA’s analysis showed that the power of the Tonga submarine volcano eruption is about 10 Mt (megaton) based on TNT explosives, more than 500 times stronger than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima during World War II.
James Gavin, chief scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, said in an interview with NPR, a public radio in the United States.
The U.S. Geological Survey previously stated that the earthquake caused by the volcanic eruption was equivalent to a 5.8 magnitude earthquake.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration analyzed that the volcanic eruption had a radius of 260 km and that ash, steam and gas rose up to 20 km into the sky.
